Keep Firewood Away From the House
Do not stack large amounts of firewood directly against your home, garage or other structure. Firewood can provide hiding places for insects and small animals, and tightly packed wood can hold moisture against surfaces.
Keep It Off the Ground
Use a rack, pallets or another raised base so the bottom layer is not sitting directly on soil or wet ground. This helps reduce moisture absorption and improves airflow.
Protect the Top, Not the Sides
A roof, shed or top cover can help keep rain and snow off the stack. Avoid wrapping the entire pile tightly in plastic. The sides need airflow so moisture can escape.
Airflow Is Your Friend
Stack wood neatly with room for air to circulate. A sunny, breezy location can help keep wood dry and maintain lower moisture levels.
Bring In Only What You Need
For fireplaces and stoves, bring a small amount indoors shortly before use rather than storing a large woodpile inside the home.
